SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

2013

Inspired by Georges Seurat’s famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George is one of the most critically acclaimed musicals of our time. Brimming with beauty and light, Sunday is a deeply moving love story that connects the past to the future through passionate and intensely personal struggles that are not unlike ones we all face at different times in our lives.

NENAproductions Theater Project, the resident theater company of the Historic Jersey Shore Arts Center is pleased and proud to open its 2012 – 2013 with this challenging visual and musical masterpiece. Artistic Director Nick Montesano is delighted to bring another Sondheim musical to the Arts Center. Previous highly acclaimed productions of Sondheim’s Company and Into the Woods have laid the groundwork for this production.

The musical won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards for design (and a nomination for Best Musical), numerous Drama Desk Awards, the 1991 Olivier Award for Best Musical and the 2007 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. It has enjoyed several major revivals, including the 2005-06 UK production first presented at the Menier Chocolate Factory and its subsequent 2008 Broadway transfer.

NENA will produce the musical Fridays and Saturdays, October 19 – 27 at 8 pm and Sunday, October 28 at 3 pm at The Jersey Shore Arts Center, at the entrance to Ocean Grove.

NENA veterans Chris Tomaino and Jessica Berger star as painter Georges Seurat and Dot respectively. Mr. Tomaino has appeared with NENA since its first season in Corpus Christi, Merrily We Roll Along and most recently, as Rod in Avenue Q. Berger was seen as Maureen in Rent, Aldonza in Man of LaMancha and Kate Monster in Avenue Q.

Montesano directs and designs the production with Musical Direction by Jeff Brown. Sunday is produced fully staged and costumed with a live orchestra.
